I have chosen to use Train For Humanity as the sole charity listed on my Heroes of Healing Group Writing Project. I will have no ads and KNOW that part of being all you can be is giving selflessly to others. All the Heroes on the list also believe(d) in giving to others and I am happy to share information with you about this wonderful charity project.
Train for Humanity is the result of three pilot project athlete-bloggers, Mark Hayward of My Tropical Escape, Dan Clements of Escape 101, and the famous Leo Babauta of Zen Habits. They are hoping to raise awareness for the current crisis in Darfur and funds for the organization Darfur Peace and Development. All three are training for endurance events of varying distances ranging from a triathlon to a marathon.
I feel the Darfur crisis has not been publicized the way it should be nor have enough actions been taken to stop the monstrosities there. Over the past five years, 200,000 civilians have died due to violence, malnutrition, and disease in Darfur and an additional 2.2 million people have been displaced.
Train for Humanity hopes to show people that with a little creativity and innovation, anyone can assist and make a difference in the world. If you would like to learn more, have a look at the Train for Humanity website and please consider sponsoring one of them or spreading the word. Below are just a few of the ways Train for Humanity aims to help:
- In partnership with everyday athletes who are in training for endurance events, and using the power of social media, blogging, and the internet, our undertaking is to create an online, grassroots, humanitarian fund-raising organization and movement to support institutions that assist displaced orphans, children, and refugees.
- Train for Humanity provides financial support for humanitarian organizations and aid relief missions who are assisting displaced persons and refugees. Particularly children who have been orphaned and live in areas where genocide is occurring or, who have been uprooted due to civil war.
- Show “regular” citizens that with a little creativity and innovation one person can make a positive difference no matter how dire the circumstances.
Train for Humanity is a non-profit humanitarian fundraising and awareness raising organization.
Here are just a FEW of their LONG TERM GOALS for this charity:
- Develop into a global, grassroots website and online humanitarian community where everyday athletes who are in training for endurance events (marathons, bike races, triathlons, etc.) can come to the site, sign up, create their own website (e.g. bobsmith.trainforhumanity.org) and seek sponsorship donations for organizations that are assisting and aiding orphans, children, and refugees of genocide and civil war.
- Use the internet, social media, and blogging to its fullest potential to help raise awareness and funds and alleviate human suffering.
- Promote peace, harmony, and understanding.
Thank you Mark for contributing to the group writing project Heroes of Healing! Thank you to Leo, Dan and everyone helping make Train for Humanity a success. Please visit their site and see how you can help.

There is an excellent book that either has just been released or will be in the next few days called Scramble for Africa: Darfur-Intervention and the US. It explains the complexity of the situation very well. There’s a website with other articles by the authors at scrambleforafrica(dot)org. Well worth the read.
