Energy Balancing Techniques for Children
A Guest Post by Mary Riposo, PhD
As a child psychologist, I have become increasingly aware that children growing up today are living in conditions of high stress, and more and more children are being diagnosed with developmental delays, as well as serious medical and mental health conditions. In fact, we hear in the news almost every day that conditions such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, and Sensory Integration Disorder are on the rise. Because I use an integrative approach to healing, I have found that the behaviors that go along with these conditions can often be remedied by using a simple energy balancing technique that parents can do themselves.
We all intuitively use touch to balance our own energy. When you are stressed or have a headache, you instinctively rub your temples. If you’ve ever hit your finger when using a hammer, you know that you instinctively grab that finger with the other hand to make it feel better. You also use energy balancing techniques with your child on a regular basis. Consider this; what’s the first thing you do when your child falls down or otherwise gets hurt in some way? You hold them, rub the sore spot, or kiss it to make it ‘all better’.
You intuitively know what is needed to make your child feel better. And your child knows that your energy is healing; that’s why they come to you first when they are hurt or scared. You know when your child’s energy is balanced; they’re happy, healthy, and curious about their environment. You can also easily tell when your child’s energy is out of balance; they’re irritable, throw temper tantrums, refuse to eat, and can’t seem to fall asleep easily. They may also line up toys, flap their hands, or repeat the same word or phrase over and over again. These are behaviors often seen in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
However, most typically developing children at some time have difficulty with self soothing and reestablishing their own balance. In my practice, I use Reiki and other energy balancing modalities to help the children that I see balance their energy. But I also teach parents to use simple energy balancing techniques with their children at home. In fact, the best time to begin using energy balancing methods with your child is at bedtime, when children’s energies are naturally waning. Incorporating anything new is best achieved by adding it to your child’s existing routine. If you typically read a bedtime story to your child every night, then try adding this simple technique to your story time routine.
Position yourself so that you are next to your child. Then take a few deep breaths and settle yourself down. Focus on what you’re doing and reduce any distractions. Then, place one hand on your child while you’re reading the story. At the end of the story, stay with your child for a few moments longer, focusing on the connection between yourself and your child. As you focus on that connection, send loving energy to your child. Feel the love moving from your heart, down your arms, and into your hands. Let it fill you up and move into your child. Remain with this feeling for up to five minutes. By this time your child will have likely fallen asleep. Then go about the rest of your evening.
If your child is aversive to touch, then try this technique after he or she has fallen asleep. You will likely notice that you feel better afterward as well. If your child is very active, even while asleep, you can sit next to, or on the side of the bed, and send the loving energy to your child with your intention. Just look at your child and send the energy while holding them in your attention. Children who receive energy balancing on a regular basis tend to be happier, healthier, and have less behavior problems.

Mary and Jenny,
Thank you for delivering this wonderful post. Sending and receiving energy is really such a simple thing, but unfortunately, many people have forgotten about this.
Mary, I think it’s great you teach parents how to do this themselves to their kids. That is empowering to the parents.

Hi Akemi,
Thanks so much — I feel very honored to have Mary write. She is a wonderful person and this is such an easy yet important thing parents can do for their children. You are so right — this can empower parents instead of them feeling “there is nothing they can do” — we can ALL send (and receive) energy. Always a joy to hear from you Akemi — I hope all is well and it would be good to catch up sometime soon.
Much Love,
Jenny
Thanks, Dr. Mary, for an awesome tip that’s easy for parents to implement! It’s very empowering to be able to give people advice for changes they can make at home. Here at The Specific Chiropractic Center we’re always advocating that we can only do so much here in the office, and we’re always looking for ways to enhance patients’ healing processes outside our office. Thank you!!
Hi Mary and Jenny – I like the way this article describes energy healing as an intuitive thing we all (or most of us) do anyway. It’s nice to see the extra energy touching described – I’ve been a bit puzzled at times over the years when parents stressed at their kids’ behaviour didn’t try this sort of thing more often. It used to work with my cat!

Hi Robin,
Yes!!!! This works on animals as well AND plants! It is becoming more common to see this talked about so it is heading in the right direction. We still have a lot of old belief systems in place that need some light shed on them. Information like Mary provides here is so basic to some and unheard of for many others….
Always a pleasure Robin — I LOVED your last post — what a great book — RIGHT up your alley (and mine).
Lots of Love,
Jenny
It is certainly a wonderful idea to self-empower our kids. A few months back, my kid woke up in the middle of night from a bad dream. She had the presence of mind to use EFT to tap herself back to sleep, instead of waking us up!
Hi Evelyn,
I think this is so beautiful because it does empower kids and their parents! WHAT a great story about your daughter…. it is so nice that she has these tools already! My daughter will meditate sometimes when things get too loud and it always makes me smile.
Although she always says she is disappointed because she hasn’t levitated yet, “and I’ve been meditating for YEARS mommy” (She’s 6).
Lots of Love,
Jenny
I so love that mother-child energy of book reading, it’s one of the most special things I will remember and cherish forever, from the time whe was quite wee. Her sweet little self there beside me engrossed and happy. She’s almost 8 now and more inclined to read silently to herself, so I’m a little sad about an era ending. But it’s all good.
My daughter meditates some too, so great!
(I came here via Lets Live Forever! Glad I did.)
