It is my pleasure to present a guest post by Amy Jewell, creator of Cirkla. Cirkla is a directory for the body, mind, spirit and planet. Amy’s story of why she began cirkla is inspirational and I feel Cirkla will be an important resource that will just continue to grow.
Amy is a very intelligent, down to Earth and sweet woman and I would love if you would take some time and visit Cirkla. If you are involved in anything related to the body, mind, spirit or planet it is a wonderful place to get your work known. If not, it is a great place to locate resources and find lots of inspirational materials. Thank you Amy for taking the time to introduce cirkla to my readers.
Building Community, One Network at a Time
Written for Jenny Mannion by Amy Jewell on January 10, 2009
When Jenny asked me to write a guest post for her blog explaining a bit about my vision for my new website and online community, Cirkla, I was touched. When you start your own business, it is really exciting when the excitement that you have for what you are doing starts to make a difference for others. I just want to start by thanking Jenny for letting me post. Jenny has done some incredible work herself by building community around healing with her website, Heroes of Healing and by crediting the people that she meets through her blog, Healing Pain Naturally. She lives and breathes community in her everyday life and it is my pleasure to be associated with her cause.
The year 2008 was a fascinating year for me. It was the year I discovered the Power of the Internet. Like many things in life, when you are outsider looking in, you really have no idea of what you are looking at. Prior to that, I just saw the internet as a place to check my emails and find out what movies were playing…maybe find a funny video once in a while. I really had no idea what was going on. The community that has been developing over the last few years with online technology is incredible. Planet Earth is coming together online with some of the largest communities imaginable.
I have studied metaphysics and healing most of my life. My parents both studied many things related to healing and spirituality and would often gather community in the small towns in which we lived. So I grew up around it. We moved around a lot because of my Dad’s government job. In each town we lived, my parents managed to find the small handful of people who were local pioneers in metaphysics and the healing arts and gather in living rooms and discuss things. When I was young, I didn’t pay much attention to it all. I was doing my own thing, but that sense of community that they established for themselves and the people around us stayed with me like a warm blanket. I guess that you could say that I fell in love with this community. There is just something about the essence of people gathering and finding new ways to think and to be that inspires me to be a better person myself.
So a few years ago, I started my first business. For the most part, it failed like many new businesses do – but the one important thing that I learned from that experience was how to network and build community in the business world. I met many wonderful people through that business and, when it failed, I knew that someday I would try again because I truly loved working with these people. Entrepreneurship was now in my blood. In 2008, I created Cirkla. Cirkla is a website for people interested in healing and spirituality to connect and to find other people. I built the site myself, incorporating as much as I can of the wonderful things that I am learning about building community online and my knowledge of computers. As I learn more about social networking, I share it with my Cirkla community so that business owners will be able to utilize this fantastic opportunity for themselves.
My vision for Cirkla is simple. I want to do my part to help the people who have gone out on a limb to help the world and its people to live better and healthier lives…people who make it their business to help others to access those aspects of self that are not always understood by mainstream thinking. It isn’t easy starting a business and making a living at it when much of the world is not ready to hear what you have to say. I want these business owners to know that there are people out there listening. And we can find them through social networking.
When you take into account the global aspects of the social networking community, it is easy to see that there are literally millions of people out there who understand the concepts and ideas brought forth by any number of healing, metaphysical and spiritual philosophies. If you get online and start interacting, you may be surprised at just how many there are – even in your community. Best of luck to everyone in 2009 and I look forward to meeting you online!

In fact, I feel like the world has become smaller, as I feel connections with people from all reaches of our planet. And that’s awesome! Bringing them all together at your Cirkla site is a wonderful idea and I wish you all the best, Amy, in taking this to great places!
