Marianne Williamson is the author of A Return to Love, as well as many other bestselling books, and currently has her own segment on the Oprah and Friends radio show. Raised Jewish, she turned to the Christian A Course In Miracles for spiritual guidance after several years of rebellious and, at times, self-destructive, behavior as a young adult. In A Return To Love, she masterfully interprets the teachings of A Course in Miracles in a way relevant to anyone of any religion. She beautifully communicates the lessons of love as they unfold in our daily lives, and the ways our ego seeks to block love out of fear and disillusionment. In recent years, she has become involved in many social and political causes and is the co-founder of The Peace Alliance, an organization dedicated to establishing a U.S. Department of Peace.

What Lisa Erickson Has Learned From Marianne Williamson
- “It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.” Taken from A Return to Love, this quote perfectly captures the truth that our ego thrives on fear, and often seeks to block us from our own happiness and freedom, even when we think happiness and freedom are what we want. Finding both requires working through our ego’s fears, and doubting their validity, so that we can let go into a greater part of ourselves.

I first read that quote summer of 2007. I was so impressed that I made it to a screen-saver on my PC. I read it over and over and memorized it. It gave me the strength to leave the corporate job I had back then to start my own business as spiritual consultant.
I love the quote that has changed my life. Allow me to introduce the whole here:
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.
We are all meant to shine, as children do.
We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.
It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
Hi Akemi,
Thank you for sharing the whole quote — it is so beautiful and empowering! Tom Volkar of Delightful Work just referenced it this week in a wonderful post. It is one of those quotes you can hear over and over again and be amazed at how REAL it is each time. Yet it is something I feel I have struggled with — it took me a very long time to realize JUST how powerful I am. I feel I am still in the process of accepting it! Your reading helped me on this journey!
Thanks again! I am so very grateful for our friendship!
Love,
Jenny

Hi Akemi,
I will let it stand at “wonderful”. I am trying not to find anything “scary” anymore and allow myself to be WIDE OPEN!
Your reading was of so much help to me as was your support through this project. The Marianne Williamson quote is one I need to print out and put on my desk so it will be a CONSTANT reminder to me!
Love,
Jenny
