Kids Computer Game Recommendations Holiday 2008

This is Part 1 of my 2008 Holiday Recommendations of Kids Computer Games. This highlights games for the PC/MAC for all ages as well as some computer related gifts. Part 2 will list my top recommendations for Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS Games. The first game in each category will be my FIRST choice if I had to pick just one. :-) But the rest are not in any order and I highly recommend every game on this list. Best to read about all in the interested category and see which ones you think your child would like that you will enjoy too!

PC Games Recommendations

Ages: Preschool/Kindergarten

Didi and Ditto Preschool “Mother Nature’s Visit”Kutoka Interactive is famous for great games and I have written about their Mia games (which you can find in ages 5-8 below). Didi and Ditto preschool is a WONDERFUL game in so many ways. While the ages say 2-4 I would say ages 2-6 is appropriate. The 3 levels you can choose from make a big difference in playability by age. You have the option of playing the story mode or the activities separately which is wonderful for the little ones. The first thing you notice is WOW this game is Beau-Ti-Ful. The graphics feel like you are in a movie and it is very easy to move the characters around. The games will teach your kids mouse and basic keyboard skills through a variety of games. The games and puzzles test memory, cognition, logic and more. The storyline is very cute and my 5 1/2 year old daughter absolutely LOVES this game! I highly recommend this game for 2-6 year olds and haven’t seen a game as good as Didi and Ditto for this age group in a LONGG time! :-) Whether it’s figuring out what animal tail fits which animal or remembering the parts to the instrument to help put it back together - the mini games are very entertaining and I realized my 5 1/2 year old has a MUCH better short term memory than I do! ;-)

Putt Putt is for kids ages 3-6 and is a car traveling with his dog sidekick. My favorites are Putt Putt Saves the Zoo and Putt Putt Joins The Circus. Although some of the others are easier for first time adventurers.

Freddi Fish is a girl fish traveling with her sidekick Luther the little fish and is for ages 4-7.
My favorite is Freddi Fish: Case of the Haunted Schoolhouse.

Clifford’s Learning Activities is a great game. You have very different mini-games that teach math, spacial cognition, logic and mouse skills. The music and graphics are great. If your child is a fan of Clifford The Big Red Dog this is a must. Teach Clifford how to dance, build a playground, play volleyball with T-Bone…. these just a few of the great games included.

Reader Rabbit Preschool has been a favorite of my kids for the last 6 years. The character has been around for over 20 years. This program develops your child’s essential learning skills with games that teach: - Pre-reading, counting, and Math. Always cute sounds and animations. A great learning game and includes sing along songs which are lots of fun.

KaleidoDraw which is the first program I saw has a demo version available on the site that is fun and allows you to see some of the possibilities of creations. The description of Kaleidodraw from the site is as follows, “Discovering and exploring patterns is a path to understanding how the world works. KaleidoDraw repeats drawings around a point, spinning out ROSETTE PATTERNS, the kind you see in snowflakes, flowers, starfish, rose windows, plates, hubcaps… even faces! With a wide variety of PALETTES from which to choose, artists can make magic by drawing with colorful objects selected for the symmetries that they display. SAVE and PRINT functions allow artists to keep their creations for posterity, use them in other programs, email to a grandparent, make scrapbooks & iron on transfers & greeting cards. The possibilities are as endless as the program.” The company that puts out Kaleidodraw has tons of other wonderful games as well. Please click here to see my full review.

Ages 5-8

Jump Start World Kindergarten was our favorite computer game to prepare our daughter for Kindergarten and she still loves it. It has the cute characters that accompany all the Jump Start titles (by Knowledge Adventure) and lots more. For a very inexpensive price ($9.99) you get the starter software that comes with the first 2 of the 12 levels which has over 30 activities and games that your children can continue to play. It sends the parents updates by email on how your child is doing and even lets you customize the hot air balloon in the game with a special message for your child. For more info and my full review click here.

Mia Games These have a little mouse on an adventure and games relating to that subject (Math, Reading, Science, Language). They let you pick different levels according to age so it is challenging but not impossible. The graphics and sound are beautiful. Mia is a cute character — her voice is a little too cutesy for me and I was pleasantly surprised my son didn’t write them off as “girly games” because of it. They have tons of great puzzles as well as games to keep you going until the adventure is solved. My son’s favorites were: Mia’s Math Adventure: Just in Time and Mia’s Reading Adventure: The Search for Grandma’s Remedy. These games can range in age from 5-9 depending on your child’s reading and math levels.

Wizmo’s Workshop is an awesome learning game that is often overlooked for almost all ages up until 9 as well. For the younger ones they might need some help with a few of the games. You are trying to win minigames to get parts of inventions Wizmo is trying to put together. You also get funny prizes and trophys for your “room” for winning games. A beautiful game and lots of fun . This one holds the interest from archery games, concentration type games, pattern games and even reading games…. An all time favorite in our home.

JumpStart First Grade (Ages 5-7) is a GREAT game with tons of activities to teach addition, subtraction, reading, money, time, music, art and following directions. Children can change the level difficulty themselves by clicking on the level gauge on the screen. Lots of fun stories and music and engaging games.

Pajama Sam is a little boy who is in his PJ’s solving his adventures. Ages 5-8. GREAT adventure game! My favorite of this series is Pajama Sam: No Need to Hide When it’s Dark Outside

Spy Fox is a Fox who is a Spy and uses lots of cool spy gadgets to solve mysteries. Also an adventure game. Requires a little more thinking outside the box and is probably better for the seasoned adventurer. Ages 6-9 and my favorite is Spy Fox: Dry Cereal

Spongebob :Employee of the Month is an entertaining adventure game. If you can stand to bring ANY MORE Spongebob into your house! My kids loved it and we all had lots of laughs figuring it all out. A standard adventure game with inventory and logical thinking — although it is Spongebob so you might have to think outside the box at times!

AGES 7-10 and 10 and UP

Zoo Tycoon 2 is WONDERFUL and you don’t need to have played the first one. In it you can do tutorials to learn how everything works first. Then you have the option of making your own zoo from scratch or playing a game with tasks you have to complete. When you make a zoo you do EVERYTHING. Decide whether it will be big, medium or small and what location it will be in. You design cages, roads, amusements and food areas, gift shops, hire zookeepers and maintenance people, add animals after you have ensured their fenced area has the right ground, shelter, food, trees, rocks, toy, etc. In this version you can even play as the zoo-keeper if you like. You can also zoom in on people and see what they like about the zoo and what they don’t. You set up donation boxes around the zoo to earn extra money. For my full review click here.

Zoombinis Logical Journey is a WONDERFUL game. If you look at the reviews on amazon you will be amazed to see not a negative word can be said about the game — it really is brilliance. First you pick 16 of these creatures called Zoombinis, and you are supposed to free them from their island. On the way to their new home, there are several tests (games) to go through. Each game is great and will test logic and brain use. This is truly a game for the whole family and I have seen much younger children playing it as well as adults and everyone finds it intriguing.

Nancy Drew (Ages 8-12) offers a series of adventure mysteries that have great graphics, sound and are challenging. You are Nancy Drew are have to walk around talking to various characters gathering clues in order to solve the mystery. These are for kids that used to these kinds of games otherwise you might have a frustrated child on your hands! If you want to sit with your child and get involved in the movie-like adventure with them — these are the games for you! My favorites are Nancy Drew: Last Train to Blue Moon Canyon and Nancy Drew :Message in a Haunted Mansion.

Spore: (AGES 10 and up): Spore has been called the game of the year by many reviewers and even Time named it one of the best Inventions of 2008. I wrote a detailed description of it here.

Hoyle Games — Hoyle is the champion of puzzle and card games. They have many games bundled together that you can play alone or against the computer. Whether it be puzzle, board or card games you and your children want to play — you will find it with Hoyle. Ages range from 5-adult and there are so many titels to choose from. Go here to check out all they offer.

For the computer but not technically computer games

There is no end to the online communities for kids now. Club Penguin seemed to have been a front runner but now there are so many more.

If you buy a Webkinz or Ty Beanie Baby 2.0 you get access to their corresponding online communities (Webkinz and Ty) AND get a cute stuffed animal for your child as well! My kid’s are still Webkinz fans but also really enjoy being online at Ty. Both companies have very good quality stuffed animals and wonderful and safe online communities for children to play games and take care of their animals.

Many online communities charge your child to be a member per month. Please see my reviews to judge which would be the best investment for your child. They are all very different. Jump Start is educational and animated much like their games.  Kerpoof is an art/movie/animation/creative based site. Dizzywood has an environmental theme behind it. Zookazoo has an animal and conservation theme. Club Penguin is the most famous and has a very easy place for kids to meet up safely but not much in educational games. It will depend on what you are looking for — for your child…. Club Penguin links to the site as I have not formally reviewed it but mentioned it several times on here.

Jump Start

Kerpoof

ZookaZoo

Dizzywood

Club Penguin

There are tons of other games with educational value that I have listed elsewhere on this site. Please visit my reviews by gernre and games specifically for different ages. I will be listing Part II with my Nintendo DS and Nintendo Wii games soon which will have more listed for older children. Worried about gifts getting to you on time? Join Amazon Prime for $79 a year you are guaranteed FREE 2 day delivery and for $3.99 you can upgrade to 1 day shipping UNLIMITED throughout the year. I’ve been using it for 2 years and it helps with my late shopping! Happy Holidays!

Holiday Kids Online Computer Games and Spot the Differences

I am working on some reviews of AMAZING kids computer games to recommend for the holidays. In the meantime you can check out my recommendations from last year (which I still whole heartedly recommend).

You can also check out these sites that have games for the holidays:

Here some links for the younger ones:
Fun Holiday Games from Kaboose online
Cute Penguin Diving Game
Lead Santa and his reindeer around a racetrack
Dinosaur Design has a cute one where you have Rudolph fly and avoid birds and other obstacles
Fast, simple adventure game as Alfie the Elf helps Santa - also from dinosaur design
A holiday memory game that is fun and BOY does it test you! (Also by Dinosaur Design)! My son Alex and I got a 91 — can you beat our score?
Make your own snowflake at the Snowflake Factory — fun — you can have the snowflake do different things after you create it. — yep Dinosaur Design They offer some other holiday and regular games as well but I featured my faves for the holidays.

And some for the teens and on up:
Miniclip Games has some fun ones for the older crowd. There are a few here for the younger ones but I’d screen them first.
Nitrome Games has some good holiday ones as well as others but I’d recommend screening them as well.

Spot the Differences (5 Differences)

Here’s a game I like to play with my kids: Spot the 5 differences between the two pictures by clicking on the spots that make them different. Find all 5 to be given another picture…. Addicting and fun for kids and adults! Enjoy!

Kerpoof — WONDERFUL Online Art Site for Kids

Kerpoof is an online art studio where your children can use their creativity to create art or videos using animation! Their imagination is limitless on this site for creating and sharing their artwork with friends. This site has a free way to play and offers more if you become a paid member. Membership is what seems to be standard price for most paid kids sites (about $5/month and less if you sign up for a few months at a time). The best thing is they offer it FREE for Classrooms and School use and I highly recommend teachers checking out that option. This site inspires creativity and offers tutorials on how to create. I will outline what you can do for free and also write on what the benefits of a paid membership are.

Sign up for a free membership and you will be able to utilize saving pictures to a gallery, emailing your creations to friends, sharing your creations with everyone on the site and adding favorite things to your backpack for you to use on other applications. It is broken down as shown: Make a Picture, Movie, Drawing, Card or Story.

Make a Picture

You need to pick a background first that you want to design on. Even with a free signed up membership you get TONS of options. After you pick a design a page comes up with lots of options for adding text, pictures, word bubbles, shapes and just about anything else you would need to add to a picture. There is also a search option so a child that knows how to spell can look for specific graphics to add. You can rotate, stretch and move the graphics wherever you like. There are so many options here and my 5 year old daughter had fun playing with this as well as my 9 year old son. You can print your creation and you can save it for others to look at. As you submit and rate other’s pictures you earn coins that can be used to spend in the shop on new graphics, music, drawing tools, etc. VERY fun and it was nice to go through with my kids and look at what other people had created. There really is no limit to what kinds of pictures you can create.

MAKE A MOVIE

The first thing you need to do is select a storyline to make a movie. Kerpoof then allows you to select from several different scenes. I recommend this for ages 7 and up as it was a little difficult for my daughter who is just beginning to read to understand all that is involved in creating a movie. Still with some assistance even a younger child would be able to make a short movie without much difficulty using this application. You drag objects into the picture. Clicking on the object tells you WHAT that object is allowed to do. There is an instructional video on the site on how to make a movie that I recommend the kids watching to maximize their potential in use. The movie making application is A LOT of fun and you can add music, new scenes and more to make it your own. This was also the BEST movie making application I have come across for younger kids on the internet yet! My son is telling all his friends to sign up to make movies and they are having a blast.

MAKE A DRAWING

Make a Drawing is like a huge Doodle Pad filled with cool options to enhance your drawing experience. The shape censor allows for you to draw perfect circles, triangles, rectangles or squares. The color mixer allows you to get get whatever color you want perfect. You can change the thickness of lines drawn, move objects around, use different drawing tools (as you buy them with coins earned), erase, email, print and more. It is amazing to see some of the creations made with this application and fun to go and rate some with the kids. Cool and very simple to use platform and I feel ages 5 and up would “get it” and be able to create with it.

MAKE A CARD

Pick an occasion from the many offered and begin to design a card. Using the graphics given to you and using the search you can find anything you need to make a unique and creative card. You can add your own special touches by drawing on it as well and they have lots of occasions to choose from. My children started making their friends birthday cards on the computer a while back and really love it. This program makes it easy to do so. They think of things that person enjoys and do searches for graphics of them to add to the card to make it special for the person receiving it. Another great application from Kerpoof!

MAKE A STORY

Choose from a storyline and let your imagination take over. Design each page with text, pictures, objects you have drawn and anything else you can imagine. Keep adding pages as you develop your story and then print, email and/or save. My 9 year old son really enjoyed doing this and I feel it is an excellent activity to inspire creativity.

KERPOOF OVERVIEW Free/Paid

With a free membership you can still edit an avatar, buy many more drawing tools, music, backgrounds etc. You can also add your favorite graphics to your “backpack” so that they are there to use no matter what background or drawing application you pull up. My son has played on this site for hours and is not yet asking for a paid membership. Paid membership DOES allow for the maintenance of their ad-free site which is highly valuable when you have young children. If Alex continues to play on the site and enjoy it (which I believe he will) I will definitely obtain a membership for him. Kerpoof also has a coloring page for younger children to print out which is WONDERFUL and has MANY pictures.

For the paid membership ($4.39/month) you get the ability for your kids to chat (safety), create and join groups and also have fun with “Buddy Draw”. You also get access to more special effects, characters, avatar styles, props, music, movies to build from, and tons more stuff to spend your “Koins” on.

Kerpoof is easily one of the best art sites I have found online for kids and adults of all ages. After I visit a site like this I am so inspired and happy that I get to review children’s games! Thank you Kerpoof for providing high quality content, encouraging creativity and imagination all with an easy to use interface and most importantly in a very safe environment for kids!

Bloons — Fun Game You can Play here

This is my first time featuring a game you can play on my site. It is a fun one I have liked for a while. It takes forethought and planning which is never a bad thing! Simple premise - you are a monkey allowed to shoot a certain number of darts to pop a certain percentage of balloons on the screen to get to the next level.:-) Enjoy and tell me how you like it.

Pauly’s Playhouse — Fun Free Online Site for Kids

Pauly’s Playhouse

Pauly’s Playhouse is a fun place for little children to play games. This is an ad-free VERY safe site for your child. While a few games can be played by older children (ages 8 and up) I would HIGHLY recommend this site for ages 7 and under. You can click on any of the below images of the games to go directly to them.

The site has a few different areas which I will highlight.

THE LABORATORY

The Lab is perfect for Halloween. Lots of fun games with ghost and pumpkin themes. There is even a scary noise maker (I’m ready to hear that repeatedly when my kids get home and I show them). ;-) Here are a couple of games that I recommend from the Lab but as you can see there are lots more offered:

BOO’s Blocks

Boo’s Blocks is a Ghostly Tetris game — this one can be played and enjoyed by older kids as well.

MEET The FRANKENFACES

In Meet the Frankfaces you pick whether you want to make a Mr. Frankenface or a Mr. Frankenface then have some fun picking out their nose, eyes, mouth, color of face, hat and more!

GAMES

There are MANY fun games at Pauly’s Playhouse. Most of these are for younger kids (7 and under).

Enjoy! Here are a few of my favorites:

DINNER TIME FOR SPOTS

Dinner Time for Spots is a cute game. You use the arrow keys to fly spot around and collect leaves. Make sure you avoid those acorns! Dinner Time for Spots is good for teaching kids how to use the four arrow keys to maneuver around the screen.

Wild Safari Crossword

Wild Safari Crossword is a play one time game that is for kids that know how to spell the animal names pictured. Cute pictures and great for children that recently learned to read.

Brownie Bear’s ATV Adventure

In Brownie Bear’s ATV Adventure you use the left and right arrow keys to avoid obstacles such as branches and rocks. Cute game to teach kids how to use the left and right arrow keys well.

Treasure Hunter

In Treasure Hunter you have to collect all the jewels and escape without bumping into anything (including the octopus). Cute game reminiscent of pacman but MUCH slower for the younger kids.

There are many other cute games to check out in Pauly’s Playhouse. The site also includes a place for Videos which includes one cute animation right now and hopefully they will add more. I had my 5 year old daughter play on the site for a while and she really loved it. She had an easy time figuring out how to play the various games and was able to get around the site fine. When I was giving her a bath tonight she said ‘I really like that Pauly’s Playhouse”…. that’s about as good as a review as I ever get!

Pauly’s Playhouse is a wonderful site for preschool children up until the age of 7 or so. It is so nice to see a safe site that teaches computer skills while providing cute animations and easy themes to understand. Thanks — I have bookmarked a new site for my daughter and had a lot of fun writing this review and testing the site!

Roblox — Fun, Free and Educational Building Site for Kids

ROBLOX — Wonderful Building Site for Kids

I usually hear about games from referrals, reviews, advertisements… I heard about Roblox from my 9 year old son who GREATLY enjoys playing it and asked us to help him sign up a few weeks ago. Roblox ’s description to parents about the site is as follows:

What is ROBLOX?
ROBLOX is unique among kid-targeted sites in that everything in the world is designed and constructed by individual members of the ROBLOX community. Every member is granted a place along with an infinite supply of ROBLOX building pieces. Members design and build anything imagined — be it a navigable skyscraper, a working helicopter, a giant pinball machine, a multiplayer “Capture the Flag” game or some other, yet-to-be-dreamed-up object or activity.
What can you do in ROBLOX?
ROBLOX members can choose to play and create alone or, with the help of personal and customizable avatars, they can choose to be social and engage with others. Members can explore the world with their avatars, meet and communicate with other members, visit other member-created environments, and collaborate with others on projects. There are no pre-defined goals in ROBLOX. The focus is largely on creative and open-ended play. However, there are numerous member-created and very popular games — both solo and multiplayer — from head-to-head bobsledding to multiplayer paintball.

This Video gives a good look at what Roblox is like:

You can play as a guest on Roblox but also sign up as a member. As a free member they take very little information from you; just a username and email address. The site prides itself on internet safety for your kids so recommends the username does not give away the child’s name or location. The child can sign up for limited chat (under 13 year olds) but if it is for over 13 you will need a parent’s email address to confirm. While 13 and up chat may look like total freedom — the children’s words are sent through a filter and policed and they have zero tolerance for profanity and bullying.

There is a download process to get Roblox to run on your computer and I want to warn that you should have a decent computer for load time and playability. There are a lot of pieces to build with and it seems to work much better based on the speed of the computer and the connection.

Roblox definitely gets kids in a creative mode. They can enter and go to PLAY where they are given a house and can walk around with the keyboard keys and explore and also interact with stuff. They can go to the catalog and get things for free or buy things with tickets and/or coins. There are lots of things offered for “free” and as standard membership is free there really doesn’t feel like a need to upgrade unlike some of the other sites like Club Penguin. My son was quick to point out he got a free pool with a diving board, a free movie theater and much more that he was able to add to his space.

Some other info for parents from the site:

ROBLOX is free to join

Standard membership in ROBLOX is free. This option entitles kids to sign-up for ROBLOX on their own and to participate on a limited basis. Account members are given an avatar and the ability to design, build, and save only a single place.
Games and points
Members are recognized and earn rewards for their level of participation, the quality and popularity of their creations, and for their community spirit. Rewards range from specialty badges, to site-wide promotion of member-created content, to actual ROBLOX currency (”ROBUX”) that can be redeemed in the ROBLOX catalog for avatar accessories and premium construction materials.

In Build Mode there are TONS of options. You have tools and can insert bricks, robots, furniture, roads, billboards, game objects, models and much more. It has the feel of building with legos or blocks. You can move around and interact with objects and you can also copy, pick up and delete objects.

I found the interface a little detailed and think it would require some getting used to. That is the only reason I think anyone younger than 8 might become a little frustrated with the game. That being said, it is a totally safe environment and if the parent or an older sibling sat down with a younger child to show them how it all worked - they might be able to handle it.

I like Roblox and recommend it. My son has had a lot of fun building and learning. I can see him sticking with this site for quite a while and I will recommend it to other parents as well. Thank you creators of Roblox for providing a safe and different kind of site for children to build, play and learn!

Generation Cures - An Inspirational and Fun Kid’s Site

Generation Cures is an educational, inspirational fun and FREE website. It was created by “Children’s Hospital Boston” and is like nothing I have ever seen! It has an online community created for tweens to educate kids about compassion and caring while raising money for pediatric medical research (by donation). It is the world’s first “caring-and-curing” site that aims to make sicks kids better and keep healthy kids well. There are so many positive things about this site the only hard part is WHERE to begin. The Children’s Hospital of Boston is already a global leader in pediatric research. I feel this now makes them a global leader in what a kid’s site and a hospital’s site can offer as well.

Here is how the site is broken down:

Zebrafish:

This is a series of animated online episodes that tell the story of children who form a band. When one of the members of the band falls ill, they come together for a common goal. By combining their talents the kids begin to see how they can effect change in the lives of others and in their communities. This is such an inspiring series and it is “cool” as well and will appeal to kids, tweens and adults as well. You can go directly to the link above or click WATCH from the Home page of Generation Cures.

Caduceus:

Children are transported to the mythical land of Alterica where they play an online adventure game filled with many puzzle games. Their quest is to find a cure for a deadly virus that is devastating the land. The kids are healers in this fantasy world and assume the roles of both a research scientist and a doctor. The games are logic and skill based and are a lot of fun. The graphics for the adventure game are phenomenal.

Kids Videos:

Children directed and produced videos to document inspiring treatment provided to children at Children’s Hospital Boston. Kids get a real life glimpse into the life of children who have overcome diseases. This makes it more real to children and will fill them with compassion as well as hope should they ever be faced with illness themselves or watch someone close to them go through it.

DONATE:

There are many ways to help support Children’s Hospital Boston. Please visit their page “GIVE” to find out ways you can help even if you are unable to donate money.

Questions:

For any Questions you have regarding the Generation Cures site you can go to the Generation Cures Parents Site for Childrens Hospital Boston.

This site and cause are near and dear to my heart. It combines my love of healing, children, games and giving which are 4 of my biggest passions. Please visit Generation Cures and encourage your kids to do the same. You will be entertained and will be learning and inspired in the process.

You can share your favorites with friends then visit the SPORE website and look at all the other cool creatures your friends and people all around the world are making—and then pull them into your SPORE Creature Creator and play with them!
