Time to review the games we got for Christmas for the Nintendo Wii as well as a few of our favorites. I still am a HUGE fan of the Wii and honestly can’t imagine our home without it. We still play the original game that came with it more than any of the others, “Wii Sports” but there are a lot of other wonderful ones out there.
I mentioned Mario Party 8 in another post and this is still a GREAT one for the whole family. All 4 of us can play and have fun. I recommend this for ages 5 and up. Lots of great ways to play as an adventure, mini games or like a board game with mini games.
In the same feel as Mario Party 8 is Sonic and the Secret Rings which is good for 4 players as well. You can either play in mini-game mode or adventure mode and they have some really fun and different mini-games. You unlock the mini games as you go. I am not as big on the single player game. It feels a little harder and more difficult to control. I’d recommend the multi-player for ages 5 and up but would probably say 8 and up for the single player game.
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games gets a mixed review. While I really do enjoy the games… the controls are a bit confusing. You get the hang out of them after a few times but if playing with younger kids I recommend getting the hang of it first and THEN introducing the kids to it. Also I don’t like that they never really say how to unlock new events and there are a LOT to unlock. The games themselves are good though but for patience sake I would only recommend this for ages 8 and up although content in appropriate for all ages. One of the best perks is you can play as your Mii in this one!
Rayman Raving Rabbids is another one you can play alone or multi-player. Playing alone unlocks more games. While I guess technically some of these games can be considered violent (you do shoot at rabid bunnies — but you shoot plungers) you won’t see any blood or guts and I feel it is appropriate for all ages. The game has a manic feel as I guess rabid bunnies would be a bit manic! My favorite is the music series of games. You use the wii remote and the nunchuck as drum sticks and have to flick them in time with the beat as well as when the bunnies are front and center. This game is HUGE amounts of fun with 2 players. The songs they pick are lively and fun like “Bunnies (Girls) Just Want to have Fun”. The multiplayer games are different than in any other and this is a great game to play with others and you will laugh!
The Simpsons Game gets a so-so review. I REALLY loved The Simpsons Hit & Run game for the Gamecube and I don’t like this one as much. There is some violence (beating up security guards) and definitely some language Simpson-style. The graphics are good and the adventures are challenging. It just lacks the fun and flow of the last game. I would recommend this for ages 12 and up.
Super Mario Galaxy rocks! Only word for it. The graphics are beautiful and amazing. It is either 1 player or 2 player where the 2nd player “helps out”. The 2nd player has to collect gems and can give player 1 and extra boost when needed (does come in handy). It follows in the tradition of Mario Games. Lots of puzzles, different feeling to the different worlds. Advance by completing a few of the boards in each world. This Mario did feel a bit dizzying in some parts (since you are running around planets sometimes) but other than that it was amazing to play and solve. The best part is even when Mario games are solved you can always go back and find the hidden treasures they are so famous for having…. I’d recommend this for all ages since player 2 is perfect for a younger person to play.
Warioware Smooth Moves is so so. It’s FRANTIC. If you have never played a Wario Moves Games before this definitely very different than the other Mario-type games. There are micro-mini games but to say they are each 5 seconds long might even be an exaggeration for length. It is really only a one person game. The multi-player version you hand the wii remote back and forth so it doesn’t have the feel of a true multi-player game . You hold the Wii Remote as shown and they lead you through about 20 or more consecutive fast paced games. All in all they say they have over 200 micro-mini games. Each is a little different and you never know if you will be playing tennis, lifting or maneuvering something or even picking someone’s nose hair (I know, gross!). I’d recommend this for ages 10 and up.
All in all we LOVE the Wii and are always excited when we receive a game. It’s a great way to get the whole family up and playing!
