Kids Non Violent Computer Games – 2009 Holiday Recommendations

It is THAT time of year – the commercials have begun and if your kids are anything like mine they already have their lists going for all the things they are hoping Santa will bring.  My son is ten and I have still been able to keep him AND my 6 year old daughter AWAY from violent computer games and sites.  Luckily there are MANY top choices for non violent computer games for kids that they will thoroughly enjoy. I have written Holiday recommendations in 2008 for PC Games/Sites and for Nintendo Wii and DS Products and those still stand true.  In this day and age there are many options for buying a game for the family or children – you can buy a console or hand-held game, buy a full version of a game online,

Mechinarium – Awesome Online Adventure Game for The Whole Family

machinarium titleFrom Amanita Design, makers of Quest for the Best and Samorst 1 & 2 (which I mentioned in Top Free Online Adventure Games) comes their newest installment which is so much more than a kid’s computer game.  Their games draw you into the story and though odd, propel you forward to figure out WHAT is going on and make you ask, “how can I make it right?”  Mechaniarium comes with a free demo to play online as well as the paid version which offers more boards.  Beautiful graphics, sound and thinking puzzles combine to make this another brilliant edition to the Amanita Design games.

michanarium scene1You are a robot in Mechinarium (that is when you find your parts and PULL yourself together. ;-)

Top Free Online Adventure Games for Kids on Up

I have mentioned Jay is Games before as one of my favorite places to find out about kids computer games and games for all ages.  Most of their games listed are free flash games and some are downloads.  I wanted to showcase a few of my favorite point and click adventure games (NOT escape the room games) that are fun for the kids or your whole family to play.  The games I am mentioning all have a similar feel, are non violent and have beautiful graphics and sound to add to your experience.  Here are a few of my faves.  Would love to know what you think:

Escape the Room Games

Recently, I talked about my favorite genre of computer games for kids and for adults; adventure games. The classic “Escape the Room” game is a mini version of this type of game. You are limited to one room (in some of them maybe a few more) and you need to find items, combine them and use your brain to figure out puzzles until you ultimately “escape the room”. These game work your logic skills and are quite fun to play with more than one person. My kids and I check out Jay is Games “Escape the Room Wednesdays” on most Wednesdays after school to see if they have an appropriate one we can all play and enjoy. I have been looking for an Escape the Room game to post for a while and am very…

Pajama Sam and other Humongous Games — Awesome Timeless Adventure Games

My favorite genre of games is adventure games for kids and for adults. They teach how to solve logical problems, are usually filled with tons of humor and when the kids can finally solve them by themselves they feel a real sense of accomplishment. These usually require some adult help at first but you will have fun while doing so. Humongous Entertainment Games have been around for a while and I am so happy to see some of the games being available on Wii now as well. Humongous has created marvelous adventure games for many different ages. In all of them there are GREAT animations, songs, inventory items to pick up and use and wonderful characters. Another very nice thing about these games is they make them so you can replay them. They will CHANGE…

Secret Builders — Brand New Online Educational and Fun Community for Children

secretbuildersmainI knew I would review Secret Builders as I went into the weekend but I did not expect to spend hours with my kids playing and enjoying it so much! Secret Builders combines everything I love about an online community for children; it is safe with no ads, it has MANY educational and FUN games, it has beautiful graphics, it offers mini quests (adventure type games), it allows children to play games with each other and has many locations to explore. They also throw in the ability to have a pet dragon or unicorn which my 9 year old son and 5 1/2 year old daughter thought was the coolest thing in the world!

To sign up for Secret Builders you pick an appropriate age group for your child and are sent an email…

Adventure Games Age 12 – Adult

Adventure Games are my favorite genre of computer game hands down. I grew up on the text adventure games like the original “Adventure” and the Zork Collection. A good adventure game makes you feel like you are part of the story. You use your brain (and your good old inventory) to figure out the challenges ahead. These games help with logical thinking and are good to play with others since you will get more ideas on what to do next. I already posted on my favorite adventure games for ages 3-12 so now it’s time for my 12 and up collection.

Ages 12 – Adult

Have your Kids Computer and Video Games Bond You Closer to Them – Not Separate You from Them

My children were born with parents that LOVE computer and video games. In fact when my husband and I met we both talked of hoping to develop children’s software someday and my husband had already developed a math game for kids. In our house we use computer and video games as a way to bond with our children — not separate us from them.

There was a study done recently that states that computer games helps parents bond with kids. The study was done by and the article written by Clement James, vnunet.com 29 Aug 2007 and states: “Computer games can help parents and grandparents bond with their children and grandchildren, according to new research”. The study commissioned by games developer PopCap Games claims that 92 per cent…
