It was created by “Children’s Hospital Boston” and is like nothing I have ever seen! It has an online community created for tweens to educate kids about compassion and caring while raising money for pediatric medical research (by donation). It is the world’s first “caring-and-curing” site that aims to make sicks kids better and keep healthy kids well. There are so many positive things about this site the only hard part is WHERE to begin. The Children’s Hospital of Boston is already a global leader in pediatric research. I feel this now makes them a global leader in what a kid’s site and a hospital’s site can offer as well.

Here is how the site is broken down:

Zebrafish:

This is a series of animated online episodes that tell the story of children who form a band. When one of the members of the band falls ill, they come together for a common goal. By combining their talents the kids begin to see how they can effect change in the lives of others and in their communities. This is such an inspiring series and it is “cool” as well and will appeal to kids, tweens and adults as well. You can go directly to the link above or click WATCH from the Home page of Generation Cures.

Caduceus:

Children are transported to the mythical land of Alterica where they play an online adventure game filled with many puzzle games. Their quest is to find a cure for a deadly virus that is devastating the land. The kids are healers in this fantasy world and assume the roles of both a research scientist and a doctor. The games are logic and skill based and are a lot of fun. The graphics for the adventure game are phenomenal.

Kids Videos:

Children directed and produced videos to document inspiring treatment provided to children at Children’s Hospital Boston. Kids get a real life glimpse into the life of children who have overcome diseases. This makes it more real to children and will fill them with compassion as well as hope should they ever be faced with illness themselves or watch someone close to them go through it.

DONATE:

There are many ways to help support Children’s Hospital Boston. Please visit their page “GIVE” to find out ways you can help even if you are unable to donate money.

Questions:

For any Questions you have regarding the Generation Cures site you can go to the Generation Cures Parents Site for Childrens Hospital Boston.

This site and cause are near and dear to my heart. It combines my love of healing, children, games and giving which are 4 of my biggest passions. Please visit Generation Cures and encourage your kids to do the same. You will be entertained and will be learning and inspired in the process.

Free Rice is an amazing site. It is a sister site to poverty.com which has a very important message about hunger in the world that follows:

“About 25,000 people die every day of hunger or hunger-related causes, according to the United Nations. This is one person every three and a half seconds. Unfortunately, it is children who die most often. Yet there is plenty of food in the world for everyone. The problem is that hungry people are trapped in severe poverty. They lack the money to buy enough food to nourish themselves. Being constantly malnourished, they become weaker and often sick. This makes them increasingly less able to work, which then makes them even poorer and hungrier. This downward spiral often continues until death for them and their families. ”

“There are effective programs to break this spiral. For adults, there are “food for work” programs where the adults are paid with food to build schools, dig wells, make roads, and so on. This both nourishes them and builds infrastructure to end the poverty. For children, there are “food for education” programs where the children are provided with food when they attend school. Their education will help them to escape from hunger and global poverty. ”
Hunger and World Poverty Sources: United Nations World Food Program (WFP), Oxfam, UNICEF.

There is also their sister site freerice.com where for every correct answer you give to a vocabulary question they will donate 20 grains of rice to hungry people. 5 questions right = 100 grains of rice for the hungry. FreeRice has two goals: To provide English vocabulary to everyone for free and to help end world hunger by providing rice to hungry people for free. This is made possible by the sponsors who advertise on their site.

Please visit freerice.com and increase your vocabulary and give to the hungry at the same time. I don’t know about you but I find it very difficult to be hungry even for a few hours — for many their life consists of being hungry on a daily basis. Please take a minute and help them out and sharpen your vocabulary at the same time. Do it with your kids as a way to educate them about hunger and about helping people in need. The vocabulary varies in difficulty but even if you get some wrong it won’t take away the rice you already have won.
