My children have played Jump Start Games since they were 3 and to see these characters come to life in a Wii game is WONDERFUL! From designing their own avatar, to adopting pets to playing educational and fun games — Jump Start Pet Rescue will keep children entertained and learning for a long time.

My daughter, who is six loves this game. She is a very good reader so thought a couple of the games were easy but still enjoys them and running around taking part in the many activities Jump Start has to offer. This game really makes children think and offers so much content that is educational AND fun. From designing their own “jumpee” (avatar) to running around and doing tasks and solving educational games — your child will be entertained AND learning for a long time. Enjoy this video to see some of the fun things Jump Start Pet Rescue for the Wii offers.

Some of my daughters favorite activities have been picking out a pet to play with, feed and train, exploring the worlds including going down the cool water slide and playing the MANY games that are offered. Honestly my daughter is not easily impressed with games and she was blown away by this one. Younger children might need a little help getting acclimated but the game design is very intuitive and this is the perfect game to begin your child with to learn how to use the Wii remote.

The game has 5 different worlds to explore with saving pets your main mission. Your child will talk to and interact with the many fascinating and loved Jump Start characters to guide them to their missions. There are games that educate in everything from math, letter recognition, repetition, memory and more. Pet Rescue seems so vast and my daughter has played it four times for an hour each (my limit on games) and still has barely scratched the surface.

I think you can tell I like Jump Start Pet Rescue, huh? I have reviewed many Jump Start products like their have a brilliant site (I reviewed it here and since they have added MANY additional features). I also have reviewed many of the wonderful games they offer for preschool through school aged children. It was amazing to see these characters come to life for the Wii and I cannot recommend this game enough for ages 3-6. Thank you Jump Start for yet another amazing product.

Primary Games is an educational site for children. It breaks its games down nicely into many categories including; Math, Science, Language Arts, Social Studies, puzzles, arcade, Top Ten Games and also the Game of the Day. There is also a section where teachers and parents can search for curriculum appropriate games. You can register to have your high scores saved but it is not necessary and this is a free site. They do have ads so as always I issue caution for younger children (who don’t know the dangers of clicking ads and being taken off-site) but the ads did not seem inappropriate. This site has won many awards and I can see why…. Most of these games run using Shockwave, Java or Flash. Here are a few of my favorites:

Super Sleuth — An Original game for ages 8+. Gather evidence and accuse a suspect of the crime. As you wander around you can find material belonging to each of the suspects. When you have 7 items you are sent to the lab and it well tell you how many of those items are valid evidence. You need to use logic to discard a few items and collect others and return to the lab for analyzation to see if you are getting any closer to accusing a suspect. Fun combination of walking around which makes it adventure/arcade like and the lab which you need logic for as well as reading skills.

Balls & Boxes — Ball come out of their boxes and are shuffled. Figure out which boxes the balls came from and place them back. Starts off easy and gets challenging quickly.

Number Balls – A seemingly easy Math game. Numbered balls float around the screen and you click on them in ascending order. There are negative numbers included as well…. Good for kid’s attention and math skills.

Snowy: Puzzle Islands – My favorite game of the site (that I found so far) You are a bear and can move pieces of wood to get to the iceberg and exit to the next level. They have a kids version and a harder version for older kids and adults. Fun and requires logic.

Wonka Vision Illusions is not really a game but rather a look at a bunch of different optical illusions. It is under the Science Category. Being a big fan of optical illusions makes this a fun activity to look at with my kids.

Letter Blocks — There are a bunch of letter blocks and similar to a collapse game that you have to remove before they pile up. The difference is you have to make words to have them collapse instead of matching colors. This will get kids brains working as they try and think of as many words as they can quickly….

Lemonade Stand — Set price, recipe and buy ingredients to make your own lemonade stand. Pay attention to the weather and what your customers like to make as much money as you can in 30 days. Fun game and will teach kids reasoning as well as how much goes into running even a small business like a lemonade stand.

Oh I long for the days of endless time where I can play games all day when I come across a site such as this one. I can guesstimate this site has a few hundred games and so many of them look like so much fun. Primary Games is a great site for kids to play some educational games and some arcade ones as well. There are games here for everyone whether it’s puzzlers, logic, arcade, math, science, hidden object or any other kind of game you can imagine. Go check out Primary Games and find some games for everyone in the family — just be prepared to stay a while!

When I found Smart-Kit my first thought was “wow, this site has SO MANY fun thinking games — it is PERFECT for my site”. The Smartkit site was founded by a Neurologist (M.D.) and has many fun and educational games in several categories. Every once in a while, the founding Neurologist will add an educational post about brain health and enhancement. It would take weeks to go through all their games but I have found a few I whole heartedly recommend. I also recommend checking the site out for yourself and think there is something here for ages 8 on up through adult (and a few for even younger). The ads are just for other games on their site so it is safe to let an older child play independently but the younger children would need your help navigating and figuring out some of the instructions.

Here are a few recommendations for the Flash Games:

Smart Kit has a Plexus Puzzle to try for free and some for sale. In Plexus puzzles– the puzzle pieces are all different sized and shaped cartoon characters and you need to rotate them and fit them together so they form one solid puzzle. I found this one fun, challenging and was able to do it in 10 minutes and I am by no means a puzzle expert. Smart Kit’s 3D Logic Game “Stronghold of Sage” is lots of fun. It has very cute graphics and my son loved the sound as well.

Pieces of the characters (4 pieces in all) fall and you put them together (by color) to form the whole character.

For a very inexpensive price ($9.99) you get the starter software that comes with the first 2 of the 12 levels which has over 30 activities and games that your children can continue to play.

Jump Start also asks a parent to sign up so you can receive progress reports and it will tell you what your child need help with. I think this is a wonderful game. You create your character and solve games to get gems to use for a variety of purposes. It is 3D, immersive and your child will feel like they are a part of a story. As the game progresses you will receive a pet to take care of, play tons of learning games and unlock new areas. After solving each of the learning games and some mini missions given to you by the characters in the game your child will receive a badge for completing this level.

Getting the emails from Jump Start is great as it does not just tell you how your child is doing. It also allows you to leave messages on the blimp going by for your child and to do a lot more to customize your child’s experience playing the games. The map to get to characters and places makes it easy to maneuver and my daughter loves the goal of getting the badge filled.

The goals needed to make the badge also make it seem like an adventure game combined since you need to get things from certain characters and fulfill tasks given to you.

Jump Start will ask you if you want to sign up for their subscription plan which includes 10 more levels at $8/level. It will wait until your child has finished one lesson before trying to download another. You can pay for a lesson at a time and then decide if you do in fact want the lessons to keep on going.

The games are age appropriate and are based on the US standards for schools. My daughter gets so caught up in the games she does not realize she is “working” on her numbers and reading at the same time. This is a safe game to let your child play alone or to watch them play and help them if they do get stuck and need assistance — it will depend on your 4 or 5 year old’s experience playing games by themselves.

I highly recommend Jump Start World Kindergarten. My kids have a lot of the Jumpstart games for different ages and I do love MOST of them. If you are considering getting any for other ages I recommend jumping on amazon to check out the full listing of the Knowledge Adventure Games and looking at the reviews first.

Fun Brain is an educational site right up my alley! They have links for teachers and parents, MANY short arcade styled educational games and a whole other world called Poptropica which is a social network where you solve an adventure-typed game and wander around challenging others to arcade games (as you learn). This site has many ways to search for age appropriate games, MANY different ways to utilize the resources on it and stands out because they went about the design so differently. I have limited time to spend testing it and this was one site I wished I did have more time for. I will give you some highlights and you can check it out for yourself!

Menus — LOTS OF THEM This is a site that will require some looking into WITH your children and bookmarking some spots before you let them run free…. there are a lot of options and I wouldn’t be surprised if younger children found it overwhelming. That being said — the reason they do have so many options is they offer a LOT on one site. Here are a FEW of the options:

Search by Age/Grade for a Game:

Kindergarten & Grade 1 (6 Years old and Under) This search will take you to a page where you can search by age, grade or subject….

Flash Arcades
Here you can choose between the Math Arcade and Arcade

which takes you to a board game where you play a long series of SHORT games in Math or just for fun. These games are cute and it’s not very often games will actually say “You Won” which you frequently get here.
Reading will take you to options of either playing Mad Libs Junior or Reading Books/Comics (they offer many and they are very enjoyable stories).
The Playground is a picture of many funny characters and clicking on them will take you to a corresponding game.

ALL Games — There are way too many games to get into and they are all short, fun and most are educational. When you go to this option you will also see Poptropica advertised. This is a great place to play with your children or have your older children go to. Poptropica is a separate site but is part of funbrain.com. You need to enter boy/girl and age (6-15) to create a character. If you want to save (you will) you need to enter a username and password but you do not need to register an email address. I like this feature since too many sites I go to check out have me signing up and giving my email address before I know if I even like it. On the down side — you do not know if the people playing are truly children or not…so the safety becomes questionable and as such I would either play with your children or make sure if they are older they understand internet safety.

In Poptropica once you pick your character you have the option of going to different islands to explore. Each island has a world to explore with mini gaming spots and mini adventure games built in (I highly recommend the one in Time Tangled.) The mini adventures require you talking to characters and you need to be able to read to collect inventory and figure out where things belong.

As you go through the adventure games they have little icons that if you click will give you the opportunity to learn in depth information about where you are or who you come in contact with (Edison, Ancient Greece, etc.) The gaming places allow you to ask others to play one of 5 different games together. I am looking forward to summer time to explore some of the adventures with my kids — I know they will love them.

There are also customizable features such as setting up blogs on the main page that are age appropriate for your children. There are resources for parents and teachers and much more.

Fun Brain has a ton of wonderful resources, games and activities to make children think. I love this site and will be adding it to both my children’s favorites and look forward to exploring it more. I highly recommend checking it out.

Rainforest Maths is a GREAT educational Math site with hundreds of free activities for kids from ages 5 – 12. The activities are broken down by age/grade and seem be right on target with some activities and a bit ahead with others in correspondence with what my children are learning in school in the US. The site is built from Queensland requirements. I highly recommend visiting this site and checking out some of the activities.

I will recommend a couple from each age range but as you can see when you visit with 30+ activities for kindergarten aged kids and over 200+ activities for 6th grade children — there is a lot to do and my best suggestion is checking it out with your children and working with them on areas they might need help in. With there being no ads on the site it makes it even easier to be sure your child is safe. The younger ones might have trouble navigating since once you are in a game you need to press MENU to get back to the main menu for their age. There are also written instructions rather than spoken so you will have to read to those who cannot read themselves yet.

This site is called Rainforest Maths because of all the animals featured on the site for the activities… iguanas, toucans, etc. make for a pleasant viewing experience while doing the activities. I cannot point directly to the activities since they are all simply at Rainforest Maths but I will list a few that I liked for each age group…

Kindergarten

Shape Patterns — what shape comes next? My daughter loves these puzzles….

2D Shape Trace — Have your child trace the shapes — teaches shapes as well as mouse control

First Grade

3D Shapes — Sort the 3D shapes

Position — Kids have to know their words and learn opposites; over versus under, outside/inside

Second Grade

Measurement in Length — Drag pictures to measure if they are longer than 1 meter or shorter and sort them….

Subtraction — there are MANY games under this heading to check out!

Third Grade

Probability/Chance — Many different graphics to choose from in how you want to play this activity — my son had to learn this in third grade so it is perfect for him

Multiplication — Many different ways to practice multiplication

Fourth grade

Money — Great way for children to practice how many coins/dollars they will need to pay and to learn different denominations

Fractions/Decimals — MANY different activities here to choose from to strengthen skills in fractions and decimals

Fifth Grade

Balance — Balance both sides of the scale so the math equations are equal.

Data — Tons of different graphs so your child can learn how to read all different kinds.

Sixth Grade

Position — Not only can you work on reading maps but you can design your own map for a Rainforest resort!

Frogs Functions — Input and Output — make the equation as easy or as difficult as you want….

As mentioned there was no way for me to review ALL the activities on this site. There are many worthwhile activities to check out and to work with your child on. This is more fun than going over it on paper and gives great visuals to get the learning across. Rainforest Maths is a wonderful site and I am grateful to have found it!

ABCYa‘s tagline is “where technology and education meet”. I definitely agree and can easily see classrooms using this site. They break up the site by grade level from Kindergarten right through fifth grade. The Kindergarten games would be fine for some younger kids and the other games seem right on target. I will outline a few of mine from each grade level and will link directly to them as there is no registration necessary to play. There are ads on the site and while these look like they all link to other kid-friendly sites there is the worry of kids getting to another not-so-safe site. I would keep an eye on the younger ones when on this site to ensure they can find their way around and be safe. They also have words spelling out the games instead of pictures so you will need to read to the younger ones to find out which games they want to play.

Some of the games are the same throughout the ages and some get harder in the different grade categories….

Kindergarten

Once you get into the games there are verbal instructions for the children to follow on this level. There are MANY GREAT ones for this age including connect the dots and holiday games as well. Some of my favorites for this age range are:

Put the Alphabet in order — The Alphabet gets all mixed up and your child needs to put them back in the right order by dragging them into the boxes. Great for mouse control and learning the alphabet.

Upper & Lower Case Matching #1 — There are a few more of these — this is the first one with letters a-g. You have shirts with capital letters on them in different colors. The shirts with lower case letters are plain — you have to color the lower case letter shirts with the same color as its upper case match.

Take a trip — Guide the little ball through the neighborhood and discover what makes up the neighborhood. Great for mouse control and to give the kids an understanding of neighborhoods as well as mazes.

First Grade

Offers a lot of the same games as in kindergarten plus more.

Tangrams — Pick a picture you want to make and then manipulate the smaller shapes to fill in the picture. My only bummer about this was it doesn’t congratulate you when you get it right. Tangrams are a GREAT educational game.

Count the Fish — Great little game for kids to count the fish in the picture. Don’t let that peskly octopus throw you off!

Connect the dots — With an option of counting by 1′s or 2′s.

Second Grade

Addition Practice with Manipulatives — GREAT adding game. They give you a problem and items to use to come up with your answer. For example they will ask you 3 + 2 and will give space to move little stars, blocks, etc. around to figure out your answer. WONDERFUL idea!

Keyboard Challenge — Pick the type of keyboard and then put back all the characters where they belong on the empty keyboard.

Third Grade

Connect the Dots — Multiples of 3 — GREAT way for my kids to work on adding by threes. LOVE the hight each pictures upon completion.

Memory Game — Like Simon only you have to match the order the computer screens turned on….

Fourth Grade

The Letter Creator (5 Parts of a friendly letter) — This will take your child through the parts of a letter. They can create and even print out their creation.

Skeletal System — Can you match the names of the bones to the parts of the skeleton in under 20 clicks?

Fifth Grade

Math Bingo — You can choose addition, subtraction, multiplication or division. You have a bingo card and as you answer math facts you look for the correct answer on your card until you get BINGO!

Paint — Simple Paint and text program — fun for ANY age.

Overall this site is great. There are great activities for ages 4-10. Enjoy! Thanks ABCYa for putting such a nice site together!

I recently came across Brain Pop and Brain Pop Jr and afterward spent an hour with my 4 year old daughter exploring Brain Pop Jr. These sites have been winning awards since 2001 and are well worth checking out. They have many activities and videos for free and a subscription service for access to everything on their sites. Schools, libraries, media centers and parents can use them for education and fun combined. Here is the summary from Brain Pop‘s site telling you “Who They Are“:

BrainPOP (http://www.brainpop.com is a pioneering developer of engaging, animated content that motivates and inspires children to learn. Each month, BrainPOP welcomes more than 1,000,000 visitors to its websites, reaching roughly 13,000,000 students in homes, classrooms and computer labs worldwide.

Hosted by an expressive orange robot named Moby and his teen companion Tim, BrainPOP movies cover everything from the Underground Railroad to the atomic model to Shakespeare. Interactive quizzes for assessment and enrichment materials like experiments and creative activities supplement the movies. Topics – aligned with state and national education standards and searchable by state standards – are grouped within the subjects of Science, Math, English, Social Studies, Health, Technology and Arts and Music. Our ever-expanding library currently consists of more than 600 movies for grades 3-12. Designed to spark children’s inherent curiosity, the movies are visually appealing, cleverly written and speak to kids in a voice they can relate to, but without talking down to them. All movies are closed-captioned and many are also available in Spanish at es.brainpop.com.

Brain Pop Jr. is from PreK – 3rd Grade where as BrainPop is From Kindergarten through Grade 12. You can sign up for a free test drive to see all the sites have to offer for 5 days so you can decide whether or not you would want a paid membership.

Brain Pop Jr. offers lots of GREAT learning games. They include games of memorization, logic, puzzles and also games where you can play together and act out clues. Some of my daughter’s favorites were the camouflage game, the seasons game (although we did not find it necessary to print out the worksheet in order to play) and the caring for pets game.

Brain Pop is a great resource for kids. My son is in third grade when all the standardized testing begins in NY State. He has a test in 4 days on the desert (16 pages of single spaced notes to memorize). I was able to go online at Brain Pop (with my free trial membership) and get a video on deserts. It had A LOT of the material he needs to know for the test put into a story so it is more understandable than just memorizing notes.

I really like Brain Pop and Brain Pop Jr. and highly recommend checking them out. I am currently debating opting for the paid membership because it is such an exceptional site.

These games are not the traditional learning games. The ages are 4-6 although my daughter started playing at 3 and had fun with it. The games include one where the kids can create their own musical and shape collage, my favorite where you own a “fribble” (cute cuddly puffballs) shop and have to get the customer the kind they want; be it curly haired, glasses, color etc. which is great for young ones to learn sorting and colors. All the games are cute my only warning would be that some may have trouble getting this older game to work on Windows XP. It worked on my daughter’s computer no problem but when I tried to install it on another it just wouldn’t work…..

Dr. Suess’s Preschool Learning is a GREAT game. There are 10 mini-games to play that teach memory, math, sorting, reading, etc…. Emma Sue a little girl very much Dr. Suess style has lost her mom. You are helping her to find her by gaining clues as to what she looks like every time you solve a few levels of each mini-games. Yertl the turtle is here along with some other favorite Dr. Suess characters. Fun for all and the difficulty increases as your child gets better at the games.

The character has been around for over 20 years. This program develops your child’s essential learning skills with games that teach: – Pre-reading, counting, and Math. Always cute sounds and animations. A great learning game and includes sing along songs which are lots of fun.

For the younger ones they might need some help with a few of the games. You are trying to win minigames to get parts of inventions Wizmo is trying to put together. You also get funny prizes and trophys for your “room” for winning games. A beautiful game and lots of fun . This one holds the interest from archery games, concentration type games, pattern games and even reading games…. An all time favorite in our home.

These have a little mouse on an adventure and games relating to that subject (Math, Reading, Science, Language). They let you pick different levels according to age so it is challenging but not impossible. The graphics and sound are beautiful. Mia is a cute character — her voice is a little too cutesy for me and I was pleasantly surprised my son didn’t write them off as “girly games” because of it. They have tons of great puzzles as well as games to keep you going until the adventure is solved. My son’s favorites which I promised him I would mention are: Mia’s Math Adventure: Just in Time and Mia’s Reading Adventure: The Search for Grandma’s Remedy. If you look at the reviews on amazon you will be amazed to see not a negative word can be said about the game — it really is brilliance. First you pick 16 of these creatures called Zoombinis, and you are supposed to free them from their island. On the way to their new home, there are several tests (games) to go through. Each game is great and will test logic and brain use. This is truly a game for the whole family and I have seen much younger children playing it as well as adults and everyone finds it intriguing.

There are tons of other games with educational value that I have listed elsewhere on this site. This is just the list of the ones that are specifically labeled as such. Please visit my reviews of adventure games and games specifically for different ages. Thanks! Happy learning!
