Moshi Monsters – Educational Computer Games and More for Kids

moshi start screenMoshi Monsters takes a very different spin on kid’s computer games and the recent inundation of interactive social networking sites for children. The games are educational and the environment silly, entertaining, safe and fun at the same time.  For parents, they have a thorough description of their site and their commitment to education and safety of children on their site. This is a QUALITY networking site for children to play games and learn.  As you might have guessed by the name – it is about monsters… but not scary ones – very cute ones that you adopt when you join.  There are free and paid membership options and my children have been very pleased with all you ARE allowed to do with the free membership. You need permission from a parent to join — another way they ensure safety.  It is a…

WhizzBall at Discovery Kids – A Kids Computer Game to Make them Think

whizzballmenuIt has been ages since I reviewed any of the FREE wonderful Kid’s computer games at Discovery Kids! Their site is voluminous and offers many educational games for all ages.  I had recommended Discovery Kids for Pre-schoolers but in the last two years it has become so much more.  Whizz Ball is a prime example of a superb thinking game with a similar feel of one of my all time favorites, “The Incredible Machine“.

Whizz Ball comes with many options and for the beginner and children under 10 — I highly recommend clicking on the “How To Play” and watching the tutorial.  My son who is 10 took quickly to this game and began with “Build Your Own Puzzle”.  This is also a good way (especially for older kids) to explore learning how the pieces interact with each other.

Mosaic – Tomb of Mystery — Play for free on Playfirst

mosaic-tomb-of-mysteryLargeThe puzzle genre is one of my favorites as far as computer games for kids.  Mosaic – Tomb of Mystery is no exception although it certainly isn’t JUST for children. The graphics and music are beautiful and you are working your brain, your hand-eye coordination and ability to think fast and plan ahead.  Seems like a simple premise….get all the pieces to fit into the image.  But as the pieces continue to fall and you are still debating where and how the last piece will fit – you realize this is more challenging than it may have first appeared.

I love the Play First site because it allows you to do just that. You can play Mosaic – Tomb of Mystery free online and try it as you go through the many levels they include for free.  If you decide you like it…

Zula World – Virtual World filled with Education and Fun for Kids

mainZula World is based on the TV Show The Zula Patrol and creates a new mold of a virtual environment for children online. It begins with a sign up approved by a parent’s email address. Then your child can design an avatar that is an alien and you will get a spaceship to travel in. Like other virtual sites, there are free and paid membership options, games and of course pets… but this has a different look and feel than the other sites I have been to.

Overview

Each location in ZulaWorld has a sign post where you can see what you can do there. There is also your notepad on the bottom of the screen you can check to find out. Your character can walk around from place to place or you can click on the map to travel further. There are planets…

Zoopz — Fun Kids Computer Game site that works the brain

zoopz-homeI LOVE finding kid’s computer game sites like Zoopz! There are NO ADS, it is FREE, the graphics and music are very cute and with a tagline like: “Games that Make You Think” — it is right up my alley for a review AND to share with my own children. Zoopz has a collection of games that work your creativity and/or logical mind. I feel this site is good for age 5 and up and would be enjoyed by MANY different ages. I HIGHLY recommend visiting Zoopz and following are a few of my favorites from the site:

INCH WORM & INCH WORM 2

inch-wormYeah, I DO LOVE maze games – these are my favorite games on the site! This one is very cute and starts off REALLY easy and adds challenges as you proceed. There are 24 levels in Inch Worm 1 and…

Super Secret — Awesome New Tween Site

supersecretcrescentbeachSuper Secret is one of the top sites I have seen for kids ages 8-16 online. I love innovative computer games/sites for kids and from the graphics to the idea behind it — this one delivers. The goal – to age from age 10 to age 16. How do you age? Play games, find “secrets”, help Super Secret characters with mini adventures. The games are varied from skill to plain fun and there are many of them. Yes, you can buy and take care of pets too (the biggest collection of pets I have seen yet online) and design your dorm room and apartment when you are old enough to get one.

The interface is very easy to use and this is a SAFE site with NO ADS (my favorite kind of kid’s computer site). There is reading and figuring out involved…

Wandering Willows — Awesome Computer Game for Kids

I have introduced Play First as a premier site for online and downloadable games.  I usually give brief reviews of several games like here in “Play First Games 2009” and here in “ Play First Games 2008“.  Today I want to spend time doing a thorough review of their game “Wandering Willows“.  It is a game in the simulation category that I feel many children would have fun playing. You can download and play the demo version for an hour first to see if your child likes it before deciding if you want to buy it as a full download.  I feel this game is good for ages 7 and up (providing the 7 year old is an average or above reader).

I LOVE games where you make your avatar first as do my children.  Decide what you want your character to look like and make sure your…

Escape the Room Games

Recently, I talked about my favorite genre of computer games for kids and for adults; adventure games. The classic “Escape the Room” game is a mini version of this type of game. You are limited to one room (in some of them maybe a few more) and you need to find items, combine them and use your brain to figure out puzzles until you ultimately “escape the room”. These game work your logic skills and are quite fun to play with more than one person. My kids and I check out Jay is Games “Escape the Room Wednesdays” on most Wednesdays after school to see if they have an appropriate one we can all play and enjoy. I have been looking for an Escape the Room game to post for a while and am very happy to bring you “Charger Escape”…

Shape Switcher & Letter Blocks — 2 Free Online Kids Games

Shape Switcher

Shape Switcher is a puzzle game easy to get addicted to. Simple enough to amuse kids and interesting enough to make adults want to finish all 13 levels. You have to figure out which shape or color you need to be to make it through the stage and reach the star. The shape shifter is cute and this game will help kids with logical thinking, shapes and colors. Have fun!

Letter Blocks

Letter Blocks is a great one for kids to develop word building and for adults to see how far they can get and how fast they can think! Sure to work the brain! Make words with connecting letters to get rid of tiles as more letters drop down. Don’t let those blocks touch the top or game is over!

Play First Games 2009

playfirst160x600I reviewed the Play First Games Site last April (and recommended and highlighted over 10 games there) but since then they have added so many new great games that I wanted to do a follow up review. Play First Games allows you to play games online (for free), download games to your mobile, PC or MAC for trial periods or buy the whole game. They have so many different categories and types of games. Due to the fact that after you play some you might be downloading I feel this site is better for tweens on up (9 & up) if unsupervised. There are certainly MANY REALLY GOOD age appropriate games for younger children… it will just require some supervision and exploring the site with the child first.

Play First still offers some of my all time favorites (mentioned and described in previous post)…
